Do You Need to Speak Turkish to Study in Turkiye?

The Short Answer: No!

Many international students assume they must be fluent in Turkish to study in Turkiye. This is a common misconception! The vast majority of private universities offer programs that are taught 100% in English. This includes highly specialized fields like Medicine, Engineering, and Business.

English Proficiency (The Preparatory Year)

If you choose an English-taught program, you will need to prove your English proficiency. You can do this by:

• Providing a valid TOEFL score.
• Taking the university's own English Proficiency Exam upon arrival.

If you don't pass, don't worry! You will be placed in an English Preparatory Year (Hazırlık) where you spend two semesters mastering English before starting your actual degree.

Learning Turkish for Daily Life

While you don't need Turkish for your classes, learning the basics will make your life much easier and richer. Being able to order food, chat with shopkeepers, and read signs will help you integrate. Most universities offer free or heavily discounted Turkish language courses (TÖMER) for their international students.
